History of Indian railways
History of
Indian railways begins in 1849. A british engineer Robert maintland Brereton
was responsible for the expansion of railways in india. Before independence
Indian railways where called east Indian railways.
Starts of Indian Railways
After independence that is in 1947 there were 42 rail system
in india. In 1951 the system were nationalized as one unit, the Indian railway
becomes one of the largest network in world.
Indian
railway are divided into many zones. Now there are 17 railway zones in india.
Each railway zones are divided in divisions and there are sixty- eight
divisions. Indian railway has 114,500 km of total track over a route of 65,000
km and 7,500 stations. Indian railways is the fourth largest railway network.

Mainly electric and diesel engines are using in rails but
steam engines are also used in heritage trains.
